FAQs

What’s the difference between psychotherapy and psychology?

While both support mental health and wellbeing, psychologists often focus on assessment, diagnosis, and short-term interventions like CBT. Psychotherapy tends to be longer form and relational offering space to explore underlying emotional patterns, attachment dynamics, and the impacts of lived experience.

At Goulburn Valley Psychotherapy & Counselling, the focus is on understanding how past and present experiences shape inner life and relationships not just managing symptoms, but working toward deeper change.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, what you’re hoping for, and any history that feels important to share. There’s no pressure to tell everything at once — we move at your pace. It’s also a space for you to get a feel for how I work and whether it feels like the right fit.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Everything you share in session is treated with strict confidentiality, in accordance with ethical guidelines. There are very limited exceptions to this (such as immediate risk to safety), which I will explain in our first session.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve you, therapy can help. Some people come with a clear issue; others come simply wanting to understand themselves better. There’s no wrong reason to begin.

How long does therapy take?

There’s no set timeline. Some clients work short-term with a specific focus, while others choose longer-term therapy to explore more complex or longstanding issues. This is something we can talk about together and adjust as
